In order to run your own business as a mason you must pass the California state contractors license exam for a C-29 Masonry license. Tradesmen and women who work in this trade can fabricate or work with brick, block, tile, terra-cotta and stone to create new or make alterations to existing building structures. Masonry work is done indoor or outdoor for commercial, industrial, and residential building. Work is available in both new construction and repair or restoration of existing buildings. As an owner of a masonry business you will need to have an understanding of building design and the ability to work directly with clients.

The Contractors State License Board defines a masonry contractor as someone who installs concrete units and baked clay products; concrete, glass and clay block; natural and manufactured stone; terra cotta; and fire brick or other material for refractory work. This classification includes the fabrication and installation of masonry component units for structural load bearing and non-load bearing walls for structures and fences installed with or without mortar; ceramic veneer (not tile) and thin brick that resembles full brick for facing; paving; and clear waterproofing, cleaning and caulking incidental to masonry construction.
